February Economic News

This month, the focus is on U.S. business output. Both Markit and the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) are saying that things got better for the manufacturing sector during January; however, the two survey providers are also at odds with each other with Markit reporting that the manufacturing sector is expanding at a faster pace (52.4 versus 51.2 previous) while the ISM reports that the modest contraction slowed down a bit (48.2 versus 48.0 previous). However, both reports also noted that new orders and production expanded at faster... Read More

January Economic News

2016 is off to a bit of a wild ride, at least in terms of the stock market and energy prices. All major stock indexes are down between 0.5% and 1.6% since the beginning of the year. However, on the bright side, the overall economy is expected to continue to expand at apace slightly above trends for 2015, according to Bill Strauss, senior economist and economic adviser, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Since the Great Recession, he said, the gross domestic product has expanded by 2.1%. The Federal Open Market Committee expects this low... Read More

December Economic News

The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 1.5% in Q3 of 2015 easing back from a surge in the second quarter. Part of this pullback reflects a correction in the unsustainable pace of inventory investment earlier in the year as well as the ongoing effects of dollar appreciation and external weakness on net exports. Nevertheless, the underlying strength of the domestic U.S economy seems to be intact, with consumer expenditures continuing to post solid growth rates. Many economists are forecasting growth to pick back up going into 2016, to a... Read More

November Economic News

The economic outlook has improved over the past month but not likely by the magnitude that October''s surprisingly strong employment report would suggest. The larger than expected rise in non-farm employment, improvement in hours worked, and rise in average hourly earnings went a long way toward offsetting the disappointment from the prior two month''s reports. The picture has not changed all that much however. Non-farm employment has risen by an average of 188,000 jobs per month over the past three months. The Bloomberg consensus taken on... Read More

October Economic News

The BIG news today is that China officially ended its decades old "1-child policy" after realizing that they will soon be demographically upside down with too many of the elderly being supported by too few younger workers. On this side of the world, US economic growth cooled in the third quarter despite a pick-up in consumer spending as a glut in inventory led to businesses cutting back on restocking warehouses. US Gross domestic product (GDP) increased at a 1.5% annual rate, a significant drop from the 3.9% annualized growth of the second... Read More

Confessions of a Juror

I recently had the honor of sitting on a three day trial jury. It was a minor case, an automotive fender bender with some related medical expenses, but nonetheless it was a fascinating inside look at the American justice system that few of us get to see. As I sat there listening to the arguments from the lawyers, the testimony from the expert witnesses, and even the deliberation amongst the other jurors, I realized that there are basic lessons to learn that can be applied in daily life as well as in a business environment. Be prepared with... Read More

Beginning Oct 1, the United States will finally be implementing credit card chips to help address our runaway fraud problem. Why it has taken so long to implement a technology that has existed in Europe and most of the developed world for over two decades remains a mystery. Curiously, the US is NOT yet implementing the PIN part of Chip PIN!! Someone must really love that we have over 80% of all credit card fraud worldwide! Do the fraudsters have a lobbyist in Washington?? On another note, Janet Yellen got a second turn at bat last week to... Read More

Emerging Industries 2015

Industries ebb and flow as new technologies are developed and societal norms change with new industries constantly just overthe horizon. Below are three examples of industries that are growing enough to visibly affect our current business culture and society. 3-D Printing 3-D Printing technology developed in the 1980's has only been reaching maturity within the last decade. Originally restricted to plastics and other polymers; now a wide variety of materials including concrete, glass, and soft metals can be "printed"... Read More
